What Happens Next?

Ariel O'Suilleabhain

"Harriet shook her head. "We don't have a newspaper in Moose Junction. Not much happens here. Waukegan County has a website, though, and they used to have a paper." She advises the foreign visitor to her town that Valentina Tereshkova was the first woman in space and that Sally Ride and others paved the way for that. "But you want to sit behind a desk where you could be exploring the stars?" he asked. She tells him that she is perfectly fine and satisfied that way. "Most of the time."

Abby puzzles over her English teacher. His life seems so easy and simple compared to hers. What if much of anything does he have to do in his free time she wonders. "I'll buy them," I said. "I'll tell them it's for...a school project." She remembers the words Mr. Linn said over and over. "Oh what tangled webs we weave when first we practice to deceive." Mr. Linn she recalled said this whenever someone used an excuse along the lines of their dog ate their homework. "It's better to be honest he said and face the consequences." Abby has a huge science project ahead and it has turned into a social thing.

Right now, Abby McCourt is facing the adventure of her life as her new group of friends come to her for help about an issue surrounding a time capsule. Will the brand-new project she is working on pay off and bring answers all of the way around about the things put into the capsule and buried on the grounds of the public library? At the same time, Abby knows that there were promises made to the original time capsule crew to leave the capsule alone. After all, this is a message in a bottle to the future inhabitants of earth whoever they may be to be able to know who was here and what they did.

While Abby has a lot going on in her own life what with trying to help a group of science lovers in her town and understanding that her parents finally paid attention to what was going on with her sister - her period of growth and finding out how to use her voice and get those around her to understand what she is saying has been an about three+ years challenge. Some of those she has befriended at her hometown of Moose Junction, such as Sophie and Josiah compel her to feel as if something very very profound is about to happen for her life. Will her passion for astronomy light her way?

The eclipse is getting closer and closer and the energies upon and around her and around the world seem to be increasing. What does this mean for Abby and her family? Or for her community? She asks herself the question, "What will happen next?" She thinks about her life so far and especially her life at the ages of eleven and twelve. She has a lot on her mind as she introspects about much in order to try to figure how things came to be as they are now. "The town was starting to get packed even with the rain. A couple of national news stations had already arrived, ready to see the eclipse in all its glory."

A story told backwards is sometimes the best tale ever. Abby McCourt, a lover of all things astronomy and science prepares to help her new scientist friend find a telescope he lost a long time ago. She asks herself why he an infamous Ted Talk expert wants her to be his assistant. Abby explores the prior years of her life in an attempt to unravel mysteries about her sister while she helps a scientific adult unravel mysteries about his own life situation. An eclipse is approaching, and the eyes of her town are on that.
