Bird is a young girl on the cusp of teenage hood in the 1980's and dreams of being an astronaut. Her older brothers already experience all of the joys and growth of adolescence and barely notice her. Until one day after something which really meant a lot of special to her happens. Erin Entrada Kelly paints a world from the teenagers' point of view. And while Bird's brothers don't really want to date, only one of her brothers really enjoys school somewhat as much as Bird. Bird approaches the idea of dating from a purely logical and scientific point of view. She tells herself that when it is time for her to date, she will. She prepares to advise her one suiter that she is so busy preparing for a lifetime of math and space exploration to date at this time, that she must put off until some of her major projects are completed. A very important part of her life at this time is understanding the real meaning behind the development of rocket launches and that impact on gravity and special delineation. She and her fellow compatriots for the purpose of scientific discovery during Space Exploration Class at the middle school where they attend prepare to join together to welcome the latest thus the name of the book, 'We Dream of Space,' endeavor. While her brothers Fitch and Cash continue to experience life for boys their age, Bird In the meantime, believes that astronomy is proof for planet earth that there really is a good life to enjoy in the 1980's. Bird loves taking notes during all of her studies. She keeps careful records of everything that concerns herself and science. Her studies and her science teacher are her world.
"The first thing you have to do is complete your series of preflight checks," Ms. Salonga said. "Once all your preflight checks are complete, you'll have to - eyes closed, Jessica Diaz - wait for the crew to finish final rocket preparations. Your heart is pounding in your ears. There's something you keep wondering about - stop that, Christopher, I see what you're doing - and what you wonder is: What will it look like up there? What will it feel like?" About Bird and her home life outside of the heavenly world of mathematic formulas, substance symbols and the heavenly bodies of stars, Bird does not seem to notice anything else other than keeping her learning curve high. This book for young adults helps them to understand life today and at that time. Mother is embarking on a career and although the idea of a women who actually gets paid a salary for all of her hard work is fairly established as an acceptable social norm by this time, the children are able to watch how all of that really plays out between their both duo employed mother and father. For Bird and her brothers life is what life is and then an event in Bird's life brings them all closer together.
